What do you get when you put a Jersey Girl and a South Side Chicago Girl together?
Jingle skirts. You get jingle skirts.
That probably doesn’t make sense to you. It makes perfect sense to me. To most who watch our Facebook interactions, it’s a joke that no one seems to understand that has went on way too long. To me, it was a very painful part of my career where a seasoned group fitness instructor took time to really listen to me and gave me the best advice of my career. And that is why I’m breaking my rules and honoring Evie Gonzalez today. Evie’s birthday is tomorrow and she might be a day or two past her 40’s BUT she gave me the courage to keep fighting make it in this industry until I made it to 40 AND she can basically kick any 40 year old’s butt in the gym.
And if you know her, you KNOW I’m telling the truth.
Evie teaches just about everything. If I’m talking about a certification, she’s done it or she’s getting ready to do it (she’s probably somewhere right now practicing Jillian Michael’s BODYSHRED choreography right now. Yes, I’m serious). She is a loving wife, mother and grandmother but when she puts on that mic, you better believe she is coming for you. While she is FANTASTIC at what she does and she is going to do everything she can to help you be your best, don’t expect any free passes or a babysitter. When you show up for Evie’s class, be prepared to WORK.
I know. You want to know what advice she gave me. Well, it’s something I don’t want to share because the story is long and drawn out. However, everyone I have taught since that conversation in the middle of the lobby at the gym that day has benifited from what she said. Group fitness isn’t always fun. How you come into it, regardless of how people treat you or take shots at you, affect what people get out of it. She taught me a lesson that day. I will always respect and love her for that.
And she did it with a Jersey girl attitude which was the BEST way for me to learn.
I would also like to add that Evie is the one person whose house I have pledged to run away to more than anyone else. And every time, she has told me I was welcomed. 😊
