Things just didn’t go the way I planned. Life is funny like that.
My days started getting longer. My stress increased. My workouts increased. I started missing meals. I started feeling guilty because if I couldn’t eat kale and quinoa then I just wouldn’t eat. I have a history of an eating disorder. Not good. My body starting taking a beating. I needed SOMETHING and I needed it quickly. Either I was going to be self-righteous or I was going to die. Period.
I made friends with Now Foods when I attended FitBloggin in June. I love that their company is based on people, making quality and healthy products at affordable prices, treating their employees, customers and vendors with respect and honesty and a commitment to help people live healthier lives. They are also a family owned business who’ve been at this since 1968, which seems kind of mind blowing to someone who didn’t start changing their life until the the 21st century. They offered to send me some products to accompany what was going on in my life. I needed something for stress, protein (especially because I’m vegan AND workout a lot, if I miss meals, I’ll go into a protein deficit first. I’m not speaking for all vegans, just me) and something to help me with my immune system and energy.
And boom! They hooked me up.
Before I talk about anything, let me first emphasize that I believe in eating whole foods. However, supplements are just that. They are supposed to be an “addition” or a “tool” to an already healthy diet. And on those days when I get up at O Dark Thirty and I am headed to the gym and can’t turn on the light to make pancakes like I want to or a day like today when I am sitting in my car typing this waiting on my daughter to get back from camp and will have to rush to get back to work, I need something I can have on the go. I had to open my mind to this because, well, none of us lead ideal lives. But I digress…..
I think too much of anything ain’t good for you so I was thrilled when they sent me their pea protein (lots of soy protein on the market). I tried natural flavor (tried to make some pumpkin protein pancakes which would have been good had I not overdosed on nutmeg), vanilla toffee and dutch chocolate. All good. And options are good for someone who has food ADD.
The Tru Food Vegan is my new BFF. It’s low in calories and full of goodness. I have digestive issues so the probiotics in it are awesome. It’s berry flavor so sometimes I have added a few frozen strawberries or banana and hit the road. It’s full of fiber too so I didn’t feel hungry. And you don’t have to be vegan to enjoy it. 🙂
As for stress, well, let’s see: A death, a four day trip, teaching at a conference, teaching a full day workshop, coming back and still teaching my classes and training clients (did I mention I drove?) and now headed out of town for the funeral (not to mention the rest of my life), umm, yeah. Stress can be an issue. I have found that rhodiola gives me just a little more energy and just doesn’t cause that complete physical breakdown when I am running around high strung (and I don’t want to adapt to this lifestyle but the help while things are just happening is useful). It also has other benefits like help for belly fat. And I know lots of us like a benefit like that. 🙂
And. as for my immune system and energy, well, just give me some extra vitamin C and B-12 and I’m good to go. Everyone in my family likes the effer-C packs (we just put it in our water and go!) and I just use the b-12 packs under my tongue right before I head out in the morning or like today, before my evening class when I know I’m going to need an extra boost! (and we just happen to like lemon lime. There are different flavors!)
And because NOW Foods ROCKS, they are going to give one of my readers a chance to win EVERYTHING I tried. These are my honest opinions (even though they did send me the products to review) and I would LOVE to hear yours! Enter the giveaway below. It will end on next Wednesday, September 17th at 11;59 p.m. CST! Good luck!
