Health Warrior (A FitBloggin Follow-up) and Giveaway!

FitBloggin 2014It’s been almost two weeks since I got back from FitBloggin. My head is STILL swarming with ideas and inspiration from that weekend (and, yeah, I’m getting ready to hit the road again).  I keep thinking about one meeting, one twenty minute meeting, in particular that keeps sparking conversations with anyone who will listen…

 

That conversation was with Shane Emmett, CEO of Health Warrior.

 

If you know me then you know I am extremely passionate.  And picky. So when Fitbloggin was offering the opportunity to meet with the brand for twenty minutes, I (true story) was leaving Earth Fare with a Chia Bar in my hand and I sat in my car and registered for a session, immediately, from my cell phone. I wasn’t jumping on a bandwagon (have been injured quite severely from doing so). I was EXCITED the people behind a product I ALREADY endorsed (have you seen my Instagram?) and loved so much. And there are very few.

When I arrived to FitBloggin, I immediately went to the Health Warrior table.  I’m not sure what I was looking for (well, maybe some samples of the Coconut chia bars. Those are my FAVORITE!) but I just wanted to get a vibe of the company.  I told them all of my Chia Bar stories like passing them out in church, winning their Instagram giveaway and surviving on them after I had surgery since I couldn’t really carrying anything when I was at h0me alone because I was on crutches.  They told me their CEO was coming but I didn’t know I’d be meeting with HIM.  Wow.

But I didn’tHealth Warrior Born To Run know anything about the company.  I knew I had received a copy of “Born To Run” with my giveaway package but I didn’t know why.  Well, the founders of the company learned about the benefits of chia from this book.  Aztec Warriors built an empire on the power of Chia.  Tarahumara Indians were able to perform these jaw-dropping runs while powered by Chia. So what better way to prove/disprove a theory other than to try it out?  The founders of Health Warrior began to eat chia every day, on everything.  Their workouts started reflecting what they were reading. They became faster and stronger and were able to work out harder and heavier.

(And, as a side note, after killing one of my clients this morning, she ate a Chia Bar and worked out for another 30 minutes.  True story.)

When my time came to meet with Shane, he was sitting downstairs on a couch looking like he could have just fit in with the rest of us.  He introduced Shane Emmetthimself and asked me about “me.”  He had read my blog and we talked about my having to pull out of the half marathon because of my injury (which he had experienced himself) and me doing it in the first place to deal with my grief (his wife is a grief counselor).  We talked about how I was REALLY a community person and that’s where my heart is…..serving and wanting to really help others.  And then he said two words, somebody he knew.  And my heart stopped. It really did.  It’s the person I want to work most with in the entire world on what they are doing.

He told me about a new campaign she was doing to help get salad bars in all schools.  I tried to fight back my tears.  What Shane had done was bArian Foster FitBlogginring my life back full circle.  Mrs. Obama and I both grew up on the South Side of Chicago and went to the same high school.  I always felt like she understood. When you haven’t always been on “one side of life” you understand how important it is to try to make quality available to everyone.  My entire tone changed.  Shane listened attentively. It is THIS passion and this investment in the community (and we talked about Health Warrior is invested in trying to be a large force in the community) that makes me love this company so much.  The health food store is an awesome place.  However, all of us don’t time or access.  What do we do then?  I mean, unless you have a trainer like me who was passing out Chia Bars after sessions this morning.  I still have some left over from FitBloggin (Health Warrior was VERY generous with samples and by bring Arian Foster).  I will also be packing quite a few with me to go to SCW Mania so if you see me, ask for one….if I haven’t eaten them all.  🙂

What I learned most from Shane was people and proof first.  People want to know that you care. And I knew he cared about what I was saying.  And he proved what he has worked on HIMSELF before he started the company. (Because I had the pineapple chia smoothie this morning before getting to work at 5:00 a.m. and wooooo! I felt great!).  And being a genuinely nice person without all of the glitz and glam will make you easily approachable and draw people to WANT to work with you.

But talk is cheap.

  1. I LOVED the coconut ones. I hadn’t tried the bars before, and they’re great. I brought a few home but they’re already gone. I’d love to have another box to restock my snack drawer with.

      I hear that! They are SO convenient to have for a quick, healthy snack. I only have some left because I was fasting and hiding them from my kids. 🙂

    I LOVED the coconut and coffee flavors at FitBloggin. Still trying to find the bars in my area but if I can’t, I’ll be ordering them from the website.

      🙁 Hate that you can’t find them. Once you have one, it’s sort of hard to do without them. I had my first one on an out for of town trip and went bonkers until I found them locally. But you GOTTA get some!

    I have never tried these chia bars, but I love love love chia! I swear, I put it in and/or on everything. I was skeptical at first, because all I could think about was chia pets haha, but I love it! All of the flavors sound amazing! If I had to pick, I would choose either chocolate peanut butter, coffee or coconut to try first! I am so glad I found your blog and IG I have loved following your story. You are amazing and to be honest, quite the bad ass. I am so happy to see you bouncing back after your surgery!! (:

    I would love to try the chocolate peanut butter bar. Need something since I am training for my first half marathon in November. I would really appreciate any advice also that you could give.

    I LOVED meeting the health warrior team. Coffee was my surprising favorite flavor. I love coffee, but normally hate coffee flavored stuff. Coconut was my 2nd, I love all things coconut.

    I’ve never had the chia bars before but I would love to try the chocolate peanut butter or the coconut! That sounds delicious! Absolutely wonderful! I live chia seeds and they definetly have helped me a lot in my eating disorder recovery.

    OMG I’m reading this and just nodding my head! I was also lucky enough to meet with Shane and he’s everything you said, which was so refreshing. I too LOVE Chia bars and have been eating them for a while now. Clearly we need to meet-up, teach a kick a$$ class and pass out chia bars to all!!!! Loved this so much!

    I loved the coconut one! I love that the banana nut isn’t Banana Walnut… and an even better note is that my guy eats them! He chowed down on an Apple Cinnamon one without batting an eyelash thinking it was one of his “less healthy” snacks!
    #SCORE!!!
    I loved meeting Shane, and chatting with him. He seemed surprised when I asked him to do a selfie with me, but I am a chia addict. I already have some of their chia in my house.
