So….earlier this week, I shared a few of my “must haves”; things that I always have on hand in my kitchen to keep my body functioning and happy. My lists are pretty basic and repetitive; exciting only to people who have never heard of things like “quinoa” 🙂 but it keeps me on track and keeps my tummy happy.
Here are a few other things that you will usually find in my house or in my basket. 🙂
1.) Avocados: this is one high fat item that I have to have. I know a lot of people FEAR the word avocado and you shouldn’t UNLESS it is accompanied by two pounds of fried chips, refried beans and sour cream. I do make a mean guacamole but I will actually dice it up and spread some on toasted bread/english muffin, in a veggie wrap or in a brown rice salad.
2.) Kale: all type, all colors….I love it. I eat it raw, I eat it cooked. I even juice it. Kale is so healthy for you, it’s ridiculous. I know what you are thinking….I, too, was raised on collards, mustards and turnips cooked with a hamhock or a piece of salt pork (to my Southerns: “fat back”) in there but you too can be reformed and learn to eat your greens in a more healthy form. I cook mine with a little bit of olive oil, garlic, onions, herbamare, pepper and maybe some veggie broth. You can also saute them or marinate them to eat them raw. I see those faces. Don’t knock it until you try it. 🙂
3.) Kombucha: fermented tea. I know it has all other types of benefits but, for a girl with gastrointestinal issues, it’s a girl’s best friend. It doesn’t smell as good as orange juice and it’s surely not as cheap but it works.
4.) Cashews: I love the sweetest of cashews. They also make a real creamy base for soups and sauces if you do not use dairy. I blend a few nuts with a little water and then add some bananas and maybe a date or two for sweetness (and if you read my last post, you know I will probably add some cinnamon) and BAM!…I have a sauce to put on my morning fruit.
5.) Flax Oil: I do not eat fish and so I need the Omega 3 fatty acids. I also use flax oil to make my salad dressings.
6.) Almond Milk: all flavors: regular, vanilla and chocolate, unsweetened. I have weened myself from needing any type of “milk alternative” after stopping dairy but when I want it, this is my go-to.
7.) Bananas: I LOVE bananas…..fruit is the original fast food. I use them in smoothies, cereal, with almond butter, in the car, whenever, whatever……:)
8.) Lemons: I have had an obsession with lemons since I was a little girl….who knew they were good for detoxification? Squeezing fresh lemon juice in warm water and drinking it first thing in the morning is very good for elimination. I actually just like slicing the top off of one and squeezing the juice out (with my salt shaker, of course…didn’t you read the last post? *smile*)
9.) Oats OLD SCHOOL: I keep rolled and steel cut oats around. I like to make muesli or I just like the “thickness” of steel cut oats that have been soaked overnight and cooked in the a.m. I do eat microwave oatmeal from time to time but the real deal is healthier AND cheaper.
10.) Ginger: I LOVE to juice this stuff. It has amazing health benefits and it gives me that little “kick”. 🙂
